Trump Signs Executive Order Offering $1,000 and Free Flights for Voluntary Self-Deportation

Washington, D.C. – May 9, 2025  In a controversial new policy move, former President Donald Trump has signed an executive order initiating a nationwide self-deportation program, dubbed “Project Homecoming.” The initiative offers undocumented immigrants a government-paid flight to any country of their choice “as long as it’s not here,” Trump remarked along with a $1,000 “exit bonus.”

The executive order outlines a system through which migrants residing in the United States without legal status can voluntarily leave the country using a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) app, CBP Home. The app allows participants to choose their departure date, book their flight, and register for the stipend.

“This is a win-win,” Trump said during a press briefing. “Illegal migrants get a fresh start back home, and American taxpayers save billions in deportation costs.”

According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials, voluntary deportation could reduce federal enforcement expenses by up to 70%. The government has also stated that those who choose to self-deport under this plan may be eligible to apply for legal re-entry in the future, though no clear framework has been established.

The order includes logistical support for departing migrants. Participants will receive assistance at airports and guidance through immigration checkpoints. DHS has confirmed that individuals who do not take advantage of the program may face intensified enforcement, including fines, jail time, or forced removal.

Critics, however, have sharply condemned the move. Immigrant rights advocates have called it coercive and dangerous, warning that vulnerable individuals may be misled into leaving without fully understanding their legal options.

The program is expected to launch nationally in late May, with thousands of undocumented immigrants already accessing information about participation.
